Measuring Member Engagement
Engagement Spectrum
Key Engagement Metrics
Transaction Activity
Purchase frequency, visit frequency, and spend per visit. The most fundamental engagement signal—members who buy are engaged by definition.
Points Activity
Points earned, points redeemed, redemption frequency. Active earning + redeeming = healthy program engagement cycle.
Communication Response
Email opens, click-throughs, app opens, push notification engagement. Responsiveness indicates interest in program communication.
Offer Activation
Personalized offer clip rate and redemption rate. Members who activate and use offers demonstrate active program participation.
Feature Usage
App logins, account page visits, wishlist usage, gamification participation. Beyond transactions—how do members use program features?
Recency
Days since last purchase, last login, last point activity. Recency is a powerful predictor—recent activity indicates ongoing engagement.
Composite Engagement Scores
Combine multiple metrics into a single engagement score:
Engagement Score = (Transaction Recency × 0.3) + (Purchase Frequency × 0.25) + (Redemption Activity × 0.2) + (Communication Response × 0.15) + (Feature Usage × 0.1)
Weights vary by program—prioritize metrics that matter most for your business.
What Drives Engagement
Perceived Value
Members engage when they see clear benefit. If earning feels slow or rewards feel weak, engagement declines. Value perception is the foundational driver.
Relevance
Personalized offers, relevant communications, and rewards that match preferences. Generic programs lose to targeted experiences that feel "made for me."
Simplicity
Easy to understand, easy to earn, easy to redeem. Complexity kills engagement—members disengage when programs require effort to navigate.
Achievement & Progress
Gamification elements, tier progression, and visible progress toward goals. The endowed progress effect keeps members moving forward.
Emotional Connection
Brand affinity, shared values, community belonging. Transactional value gets engagement started; emotional connection sustains it.
Communication Cadence
Regular, valuable communication keeps the program top-of-mind. Too little: forgotten. Too much: annoying. Find the right rhythm for your members.
Engagement Killers
Common engagement killers: complex earn/redeem rules, high redemption thresholds, irrelevant offers, poor mobile experience, broken reward fulfillment, and communication spam. Removing friction often improves engagement more than adding features.
Engagement Strategies
- 1. Segment by engagement level. Highly engaged, active, at-risk, and dormant members need different strategies. Don't treat all members the same.
- 2. Fast time-to-first-value. New members should experience value quickly—immediate welcome offers, low first-redemption thresholds, quick wins. Early engagement predicts long-term engagement.
- 3. Triggered engagement campaigns. Automated responses to engagement changes: bonus offer when activity drops, celebration when milestones hit, reminder when points are expiring.
- 4. Gamify the experience. Challenges, streaks, badges, and leaderboards add engagement beyond basic earn-and-burn. Appeals to achievement-oriented members.
- 5. Surprise and delight. Unexpected rewards, birthday bonuses, random acts of appreciation. Surprise creates positive emotion and memorable experiences.
- 6. Win-back dormant members. Targeted re-engagement for inactive members: "We miss you" offers, points expiration warnings, account refresh. Accept that some won't return.
| Segment | Definition | Strategy |
|---|---|---|
| Highly Engaged | Frequent activity, high redemption | Recognize, reward, exclusive access |
| Active | Regular activity, steady engagement | Maintain, upsell, tier progression |
| At-Risk | Declining activity, long recency | Re-engage, bonus offers, surveys |
| Dormant | No recent activity, likely churned | Win-back attempt, then accept loss |
